Weight in Your Gut (Impact Anxiety)
Unfired stoneware, graphite, mat board.
10”x10”x9”
2018
This piece was made in the aftermath of a severe car accident and a close friends death, as a way of externalizing the weight I felt in my stomach, the residual fear of impact that I carried with me. The hunk of clay was in my car for an extended period of time and was present for the accident. I did not alter the form in anyway so the impact itself played a part in sculpting it. I used a graphite stick and powder to completely coat the clay, making it dark and metallic. I rolled the sculpture over a large piece of mat board, leaving behind marks reminiscent of those left on cement barriers after collisions.
